The Traveler solves many problems.  This very simple folder-style notebook has two straps on the inside, one on the front and one on the back that snap at the top, securing the notebook(s) in place.  At the same time, these straps can be used like bookmarks when you want to mark your place and keep the notebook lying open.  

Each notebook cover can accommodate two notebooks/sketchbooks - the Rhodia notebooks provided have French paper featuring a lovely smooth texture and no bleed-through.   Rhodia notebooks are readily available in stationary, book and art stores and directly from Jul.
