Dayak Shawl Stick
Hand Made Fair Trade in Indonesia
5 inches long
This shawl stick, like the shawl pin of the same name, was inspired by ceremonial wood carvings created by Dayak groups in Kalimantan, Indonesia. The sculptural pieces that inform the motifs of this shawl stick represent the large and striking bird called the Hornbill, which has colorful feathers, a large beak, and a hornlike structure on it's head. The Hornbill, as evidenced by the centrality of representations of the bird, is important in native thought and ritual. This shawl stick celebrates this cultural history.
