This new stud button style was developed from a handmade silver master made years ago for JUL by a skilled artisan in the central south of Bali using an ancient jewelry-making technique called repoussé. Repoussé artisans work by placing a thin sheet of silver or gold on a stiff wax bed and carving into the metal from the back to create raised designs. The motif of this button represents the visual vocabulary of our artisan rather than a design we provided.  We wanted him to deploy his intuitive aesthetic, which resonates with ornamental styles found in many other times and places. 

When we first asked for this button, which is the middle size of a collection of three, it was over a decade ago.  We had not yet developed the stud button form and were using chicago screws to make screw-in pedestal buttons. We were not satisfied with how these designs would work with chicago screw positioned in the center.  Our three handmade masters languished until now, when it became clear they are perfect for our innovative stud button format.

We created four versions of this design - two - glossy and satin - based on the original repousse master and two - glossy and satin - based on the original repousse design with the background removed to create a lacy open-work version.
